Mental Math Sprint
How many problems can you solve before the clock runs out?
How to play
Pick which operations you want (any mix of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), a difficulty, and a time limit. Hit Start, then type each answer on your keyboard or the on-screen keypad. There's no need to press enter — the moment your answer is correct, the next problem appears. Your score is the number of problems you solve before time runs out.
Wrong answers aren't penalised, but they do cost you time: if you type a number that can't be right, the box clears so you can try again. Stuck on one? Tap Skip to move on.
What's a good score?
Scores depend heavily on your settings, so these rough bands are for the default Medium, all four operations, 60 seconds. Speed comes with practice — most people improve fast in their first few days.
| Score in 60s | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 | Warming up | You're finding your rhythm — keep going. |
| 15–24 | Solid | Comfortable mental arithmetic at a steady pace. |
| 25–34 | Strong | Quick recall and few wasted keystrokes. |
| 35–44 | Excellent | Fast, fluent, and rarely stuck. |
| 45+ | Lightning | Genuinely exceptional speed. |
Tips to get faster
- Lead with the tens. For 47 + 38, add 40 + 30 = 70, then 7 + 8 = 15, then combine → 85. Big parts first, details second.
- Round and adjust. 98 × 6 is easier as 100 × 6 − 2 × 6 = 600 − 12 = 588.
- Turn division into multiplication. "What times 7 gives 63?" is faster to recall than long division.
- Learn the squares and the 12× table cold. They come up constantly and free your mind for the harder steps.
- Don't over-check. In a sprint, momentum beats caution — trust the first answer and keep moving.
Why practise mental math?
Mental arithmetic is one of the few "brain training" activities with an obvious everyday payoff: splitting a bill, checking a discount, sanity-checking a spreadsheet, or estimating on the fly without reaching for your phone. Short, timed bursts like this build both speed and confidence, and because the game adapts to your chosen difficulty, it stays challenging as you improve. A few 60-second rounds is enough to notice a difference within a week.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mental Math Sprint free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser and your best score is saved on your own device.
How is my score calculated?
Your score is simply the number of problems you answer correctly before the timer reaches zero. Skipped and mistyped problems don't count against you, but they use up time.
Can I choose which operations to practise?
Yes. You can turn addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on or off independently, so you can drill just the ones you want.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a touchscreen you can use the on-screen number pad; on a computer just type with your keyboard. No enter key needed — a correct answer advances automatically.
What is a good mental math speed?
On the default Medium setting with all four operations, around 15–24 solved in 60 seconds is a solid everyday pace, 25–34 is strong, and 35 or more is excellent. Your numbers will climb quickly with regular practice.
