The 2,080-hour year
The standard conversion assumes full-time work: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours per year. So:
annual salary = hourly rate × 2,080
hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080
That's why $25/hour is $52,000 a year, and why a $60,000 salary works out to about $28.85 an hour. If your schedule isn't 40 hours or you take unpaid time off, change the two inputs above — someone working 32 hours a week with two unpaid vacation weeks (50 paid weeks) has a very different multiplier: 1,600 hours instead of 2,080.

Biweekly is not "twice a month"
A subtle payroll trap: biweekly pay (every two weeks) means 26 paychecks a year, while semi-monthly pay (1st and 15th) means 24. Same annual salary, different check sizes — a $52,000 salary is $2,000 per biweekly check but $2,166.67 semi-monthly. Twice a year, biweekly employees get a month with three paychecks, which is a nice budgeting bonus if you plan for it.
Gross, not take-home
Everything on this page is gross pay — before income tax, payroll taxes, retirement contributions, and health premiums. Take-home pay depends on your country, state, filing status, and benefits, and is typically 70–85% of gross for middle incomes in the U.S. Comparing two job offers on gross numbers is fine; planning a budget on them is not.
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are in a year?
2,080 for a standard full-time schedule (40 hours × 52 weeks). With two weeks of unpaid time off it's 2,000; a 37.5-hour week over 52 weeks is 1,950.
$25 an hour is how much a year?
$52,000 gross at 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. At 35 hours a week it drops to $45,500.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by 2,080 (or by your actual hours × weeks). A $70,000 salary is about $33.65/hour full-time.
Does a salary include overtime?
Often not — but being salaried doesn't automatically mean exempt from overtime. If you're non-exempt, hours past 40/week earn a premium; see the overtime pay calculator.
Should I count vacation weeks?
If your time off is paid, keep 52 weeks — you're paid for those weeks. Only reduce the weeks input for unpaid time off.
